The Boston Roman Catholic Archdiocese agreed to an out of court settlement of $85 million to settle sex abuse cases centered on abuse by clergy of young children, which the Archdiocese knew about and covered up, often sending the clergy to different parishes. The Church instituted reforms to prevent future abuse by requiring background checks and requiring that dioceses faced with an allegation to alert the authorities and remove the accused from duty until a formal investigation is completed.
