The Lord Mayor of Cork, Terence McSwiney, a playwright, author and politician, died after a two-and-a-half-month hunger strike in a British prison cell, demanding independence for Ireland. The photo is of his coffin being removed from the prison. A collection of McSwiney’s writings, “Principles of Freedom,” was published posthumously in 1921; Mahatma Gandhi counted him among his influences. (You can read it here.)
