The Baptist General Convention of Texas advised its 1.6 million members to think carefully before voting for a Roman Catholic political candidate. It resolved: “Theoretically, a Roman Catholic has as much right to be elected to public office as anyone else. Practically, it must be remembered that the Catholic Church rejects as a ‘shibboleth of doctrinaire secularism’ the American doctrine of separation of church and state.”
