Three Mirabal sisters of the Dominican Republic were assassinated. In 1999 the United Nations established the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women to commemorate the murder of Patria, Minerva and María Teresa Mirabal for resistance against the Rafael Trujillo dictatorship.
