Newspaper publisher John Peter Zenger was arrested and imprisoned for seditious libel against New York Governor William Cosby. His lawyers, Andrew Hamilton and William Smith, Sr., successfully argued that truth is a defense against charges of libel, thus affirming freedom of the press in America. This 1953 TV dramatization of his story starring a young Eddie Albert (complete with cheesy German accent) is a hoot:
