In what has come to be known as the May Forth Movement (五四运动, Wusi Yundong), 5,000 students demonstrated in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, China, protesting the Treaty of Versailles, which transferred Chinese territory in the present-day Shandong Province to Japan.
