The Sierra Gorda biosphere, the most ecologically diverse region in Mexico, was established to protect the land while providing employment, as a result of grassroots efforts. Dependent on poor subsistence crops and livestock and remittances from the USA, the lack of skills and resources has led to the imminent degradation of the Sierra Gorda.
