The Vatican abolished their list of prohibited books (Index librorum prohibitorum) from 1557, which in 1948 still included authors like Descartes, Pascal, Voltaire, Rousseau, Balzac, Milton, Locke, Swift, Kant, Spinoza, de Balzac, Bacon, Zola, Sartre, and Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables.
