The U.S. government prohibited movies and photos of prize fights. This was not a reaction to the violence inherent in such fighting but rather a White reaction to Jack Johnson becoming the first African-American heavyweight champion, a title he held from 1908 – 1912. Almost immediately the cry was heard for a “great white hope” to reclaim the title. The law was intended to deny him publicity.
