US President Andrew Jackson, responding to unrest among Irish laborers building the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, ordered the first use of American troops to suppress a labor dispute. Although work resumed, the project was finally abandoned in 1850, with the farthest reach of the canal ending at Cumberland, Maryland.
