January 28, 1573
Frightened and inspired by the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre of French Protestants the previous August (pictured below), Polish and Lithuanian nobility signed a document guaranteeing religious freedom for adherents of all religious faiths. Signatories also pledged to support each other, even if those who belong to different religions. Members of radical religious sects elsewhere in Europe found a safe haven in Poland.
