In what is now known as the Orangeburg Massacre, three black students were killed and fifty wounded in a confrontation with highway patrolmen at a South Carolina State University rally supporting 15 civil rights protesters arrested the day before at Orangeburg’s only bowling alley, still segregated years after the Civil Rights Act of 1964 had outlawed discrimination based on race in such public accommodations.
