Alabama Governor John Patterson warned Alabama State students at their state capitol protest that “someone is likely to get killed” if demonstrations in Montgomery continued. The students ignored him, showing up a thousand strong the next day. Some of the students were expelled for protesting at the capitol and at a local lunch counter. They were reinstated the following year, however, after Fred Gray, a black lawyer, took the case to court.
