The Republican Party was formed in Ripon, Wisconsin, by anti-slavery abolitionists, in reaction to the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which left the issue of slavery up to individual states.

Mohandas Gandhi launched his campaign of non-cooperation with Imperial British control of India. He called his overall method of nonviolent action Satyagraha, meaning “truth-force”.
