Trigger Warning @ Theatre for Change

July 24, 2015 @ 8:00 pm - August 2, 2015 @ 3:00 pm

When a religion professor finds his class knows nothing about a recent horrific school shooting in Afghanistan, he elaborates on the details in a frustrated rant. A student veteran becomes agitated and confronts the professor, then an anonymous video of the speech is posted, but it’s been edited and taken completely out of context.

The video goes viral and tensions mount as the professor encounters the increasingly hostile student and the administration gets involved. Desperate to keep his life on track and deny the need for a trigger warning policy, he tries to contain the situation but only succeeds in endangering his life.

This new play touches on themes of academic freedom while addressing campus carry legislation. Trigger warning policies could lead to a blanket opt out for all students or else jeopardize the very safety of those it intends to protect. The cost of preserving professorial autonomy may come at a high price.
