The International Day for Peace, a.k.a World Peace Day, is a day that is recognized across the world each Sept. 21. The General Assembly of the United Nations declares this, “as a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace, both within and among all nations and peoples.”
While the international theme for 2016, as set by the General Assembly, is “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace,” it is my recommendation, based on recent events, that we spend the day upholding a call for peace amid national and international violence.
In this way, St. Mary’s University will honor the events of the last year that continue to weigh on the hearts and minds of our community, as well as uphold the call to an agenda for prosperity, peace, and partnership by the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon.
The event will include a brief presentation, a Peace Pole Dedication, and remembrance for countries at war.
