This event occurs over four Tuesdays:
In recent months there has been a lot of media coverage of orphans and young children living under difficult, and often inhumane, conditions. These conditions have been perpetuated by individuals as well as by governments, for decades. The books for this course focus on the plight of the orphans – in the US as well as in Britain. We will read and discuss the following books: Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline; Philomena: a Mother, Her Son, and a Fifty-year Search by Martin Sixsmith; Oranges and Sunshine by Margaret Humphreys. We will also see a movie based on one of the books – either during session 3 or session 4. Participants are encouraged to contribute through discussions and questions/answers –and to raise relevant issues.
Participants will want to obtain and read the books prior to class. Registration is very limited: 12 people maximum.
