SUMMARY:Intercultural Book Study: The Life of Orphans
DESCRIPTION: \nThis event occurs over four Tuesdays: \nIn recent months there has been a lot of media coverage of orphans and young children living under difficult\, and often inhumane\, conditions. These conditions have been perpetuated by individuals as well as by governments\, for decades. The books for this course focus on the plight of the orphans – in the US as well as in Britain. We will read and discuss the following books: Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline; Philomena: a Mother\, Her Son\, and a Fifty-year Search by Martin Sixsmith; Oranges and Sunshine by Margaret Humphreys. We will also see a movie based on one of the books – either during session 3 or session 4. Participants are encouraged to contribute through discussions and questions/answers –and to raise relevant issues. \nParticipants will want to obtain and read the books prior to class.  Registration is very limited: 12 people maximum. \nAbout the Instructor: Sibi Aydelott holds a doctoral degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Tennessee\, Knoxville. She has taught in the United States\, Pakistan\, Iran\, Turkey\, Egypt\, and Qatar\, She has also worked as a curriculum consultant. Sibi is a resident of San Antonio. \n
