An Evening with Rebecca Solnit

Internationally-renown historian, activist, and writer Rebecca Solnit will be discussing the ideas in her new book, The Encyclopedia of Trouble and Spaciousness, published by Trinity University Press.

From women’s issues to Occupy Wall Street to the Arab spring, Rebecca Solnit is fast becoming an important voice for human rights, the degradation of the environment, and the socioeconomic and cultural boundaries that hold us back from hope. Her memoir released last summer, The Faraway Nearby, was hailed by critics from the San Francisco Chronicle and The New York Times and nominated for a National Book Award, and her essay, Men Explain Things to Me, has almost singlehandedly changed the national dialogue on women’s rights via #mansplaining. She’s been compared to Susan Sontag, Annie Dillard, and Joan Didion, and been called “one of our finest thinkers” by the Los Angeles Times. As the title of the book suggests, the territory of Solnit’s concerns is vast, and the evening will combine commentary on history, justice, and war and peace with captivating explorations of place.

Wine reception begins at 5:30 with a lecture at 6:30 followed by a Q & A and book signing. The event is free and open to the public.
