December 8, 1927
The founding of the National Conference of Christians and Jews (NCCJ) on this date was prompted by anti-Catholic bigotry across the country in the 1920s that arose with Al Smith’s run for the Democratic nomination. Many of the attacks on Catholics and Catholic politicians were led by the Ku Klux Klan. The NCCJ works to promote religious and racial tolerance from its founding until the present. It is now known as the National Conference for Community and Justice.
