Segregation of Mexican-American school children in California was declared unconstitutional by the Federal Appeals Court for the Ninth Circuit. Suit had been brought against several school districts in Orange County, California by Gonzalo Méndez and several World War II veterans. The photo is of Gonzalo and Felicitas Méndez, whose children Sylvia, Gonzalo Jr. and Jerome were denied enrollment in the all-white schools.
