One hundred Texas Rangers were sent to Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, the oldest Black college west of the Mississippi, in response to nonviolent student demonstrations concerning substandard dorm conditions. The Rangers swept the dorms for weapons, found none, but still closed the campus for several weeks. Wiley students held lunch counter sit-ins in earlier in the 1960s that desegregated Marshall.
