Monday’s Monument: Living Peace Wall, Sebastapol, California
The Living Peace Wall, dedicated in 2015, consists of panels of granite inscribed with the names of advocates for peace, justice and nonviolence. It is crowned with a brass peace sign. The central panel’s engraving begins with a quotation from Gandhi: “Nonviolence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man.” It continues: “We honor the peacemakers, whose names are inscribed, who have during their lives worked for peace and against war, for justice and against injustice, for nonviolent resolutions and against violence, and for the common good and against selfishness and greed. / By honoring these outstanding individuals we also honor all who share the collective desire to rise above differences of race, religion, nationalities and ideologies to that place where we are all brothers an sisters, where we share a common humanity and a common desire to live in peace with all the people of the world.” A bench behind the wall is engraved “Peace Begins With Me.” The intention is to add four new names every year.
