Theater: Reading of “The Oppression of the Oppressed” and Community Forum

September 19, 2015 @ 2:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Free

You’re cordially invited to a stage reading of Maximo Anguiano’s play, entitled “The Oppression of the Oppressed.”

With 2.3 million people locked up in the United States, disproportionately effecting people of color, the “land of the free” has become incarceration nation. But what the statistics do not tell are the sheer brutality of life for thousands that have been discarded from our communities, families, and society as a whole. From widespread human rights violations and mental illness to broken families and taxpayer spendings well into the billions, mass incarceration in the age of the prison industrial complex is a problem we can no longer ignore. Take a journey inside the prison walls with writer Maximo Anguiano as he tells the stories that have been banished from everyday sight, with key themes on the war on drugs, solitary confinement, capital punishment and more. “The Oppression of the Oppressed” highlights the harsh realities of prison culture inside of a broken criminal justice system.

This play is based on true events and will be workshopped for future performances. Content is intended for mature audiences; viewer discretion is advised.

Reading will feature Tejano music recording artist Ricky Valenz, in addition to actors/creatives Jay Windsor, Joel Settles, Elijah Rios, David Legore, MFA, and more.
