SoL Center Class: How Dialogue Can (Re)-Shape Understandings of Identity and Difference

Learn how the power of communication, in particular interpersonal dialogue, can be structured to promote openness and intercultural understanding. Participants will be introduced to concepts about social identity, stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination, together with the cultural ideologies that feed them. Dr. DeTurk will illustrate how socializing institutions can make a difference. The class begins with an interactive lecture. Then Dr. DeTurk will guide participants through the process of structured intergroup dialogue on a topic related to social diversity. She will conclude by debriefing the group on their experience.

Sara DeTurk, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication at UTSA. Her research areas include Intercultural Communication, Identity and Difference, Social Justice Activism, and Intergroup Alliances. She is the author of Activism, Alliance Building, and the Esperanza Peace and Justice Center, published by Lexington Books
