The U.S. war against Mexico from 1846 to 1848 resulted in Mexico losing half of its national territory. The expansionist drive by the U.S. under its policy known as Manifest Destiny was the fundamental reason for this war which created an internal colony in the U.S. for the first time: the Mexican community.
The ratification of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo on Feb 2, 1848, which ‘legalized’ the U.S. armed theft of Mexico’s territory, simply defines the conquerer’s conditions imposed upon Mexicans living within the occupied territory. The provisions of the Treaty have never been respected by the U.S. government thus creating an oppressed colony living in their own territory occupied by force.
How does our current system define the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and how de we begin to Decolonize that important part of our history.
