California is experiencing its most severe drought in recorded history. Meanwhile, Nestlé Waters’ bottling plants are operating at full volume, including in California’s San Bernardino National Forest, where its using an expired permit to take water for its Arrowhead Springs brand.
Nestlé’s unethical actions are part of a trend – for years Nestlé has been working around the world to privatize community water resources. Outrageously, Nestlé’s lawyers have tried to argue that the U.S. government doesn’t have authority to regulate its access to the water in California’s National Forest. It’s clear that Nestlé won’t change its practices without significant public pressure from people, government, AND businesses. That’s where you come in.
We sent a petition with over 20,000 signatures to Sprouts, a major “sustainable” grocery store chain, asking the company to stop carrying Arrowhead Springs water until Nestlé cleans up its act. The company said it would consider our request, but has refused to give us an answer. In response, we’re calling for actions at Sprouts stores around the country, to shine a public spotlight on their choice until the company agrees to do the right thing.
There are two Sprouts stores in San Antonio:
8101 Callaghan Rd, San Antonio, TX 78230 Phone: (210) 979-8121
17700 N US Hwy 281, San Antonio, TX 78232 Phone: (210) 499-1446
Take action on Saturday, July 16th as people around the country gather at Sprouts stores to call on the grocery chain to quit supporting Nestlé’s illegal bottling operation!
With 212 stores across the country, Sprouts is a major player in the grocery retail scene. Its company website says that “Responsible retailing for Sprouts is… partnering with suppliers and vendors to ensure that the products we sell are responsibly sourced; reducing waste and our environmental footprint.” Now we want to drive home message that there is nothing responsible or sustainable about Nestle’s actions in San Bernardino.
It’s great when we stand up against an unethical company like Nestlé as individuals, but united together we become even stronger. Armed with signs, petitions and flyers we can reach out to Sprouts customers, and raise our voices urging Sprouts to stop supporting Nestlé’s unsustainable Arrowhead Springs brand.
