Often regarded as the key pioneer of Chicano theater in the U.S., Luis Valdez will be our keynote speaker on Saturday, July 18, at 2:00 pm in the Aula Canaria auditorium of UTSA’s Downtown Campus. His talk and presentation are open to the public. An iconic figure in the landscape of American and Latino art, Luis Valdez is the founder and long-time artistic director of El Teatro Campesino -a forceful catalyst of 20th century theatre which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. For his excellent artistry, Mr. Valdez received the Presidential Medal of the Arts, an Obie Award, was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Theater at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and was honored with the Orden Mexicana del Aguila Azteca (Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle) which is the highest decoration granted by the Mexican government to foreign nationals. His work brings to life the complexity and struggle of farmworkers, the oppressed, our working and middle classes, the excluded, and our urban youth. We are indeed honored that he will be joining us for this commemorative event that is open to all our communities.
This keynote address closes the 15th Annual Leadership Institute of the National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures (NALAC) that will take place July 13-18, 2015, at The University of Texas at San Antonio’s Downtown Campus. The Leadership Institute convenes Latino arts leaders for an intensive, one-week training in nonprofit arts management and leadership development. The class of 2015 NALAC Leadership Institute fellows will represent ten U.S. States, including Arkansas, California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New Mexico, Rhode Island, and Texas. This year marks the 15th anniversary of our program, which makes it a form of Quinceañera.
