Bryan Stevenson, founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, author of Just Mercy, and a prominent public interest lawyer, will present the 2016 Blandy Lecture in September hosted by Seminary of the Southwest’s Alumni Association.

Stevenson will give a free public lecture in Austin on Tuesday, September 27 at 7:00 p.m. at the LBJ Auditorium in Austin. The Division of Diversity and Community Engagement and the William Wayne Justice Center for Public Interest Law at The University of Texas at Austin will partner with the seminary to present Stevenson’s public lecture.

See Bryan Stevenson’s talk at TED2012

From the August 22, 2016 issue of The New Yorker, “The Legacy of Lynching, On Death Row” by Jeffrey Toobin:

After a ted talk in 2012, called “We Need to Talk About Injustice,” Stevenson is said to have received the longest standing ovation of any speaker, and the talk has been viewed more than five million times on the Internet; it raised a million dollars for his organization, and propelled a death-row lawyer into a public figure. His 2014 memoir, “Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption,” spent years on best-seller lists. He is in constant demand as a lecturer across the country, and he’s booked for commencement addresses years in advance.

Registration for Stevenson’s lecture on Tuesday evening is not necessary; however, registration is required for the full schedule of events during the Alumni Convocation. Register here.

Two awards are presented at the annual Alumni Convocation. The seminary faculty will present the 2016 Durstan R McDonald Teaching Award named for Dean Emeritus McDonald to Virginia Garrard-Burnett, professor at the University of Texas, Austin, and director of LLILAS Benson Latin American Studies and Collections. The seminary’s Alumni Association will present the 2016 Hal Brook Perry Distinguished Alumni Award, named for the late assistant dean, registrar and instructor in church history, to the Rev. Susan McCann, Episcopal priest actively engaged in advocating for the dignity of all people.
