Catholic Theological Union Review:
Amidst the world’s increasing social, cultural, and economic disparities, the preferential option for the poor is one of the most important and challenging theological articulations of the last century. By and large, however, this perspective has emerged from just about everywhere but North America. John Markey’s brilliant reflection, Moses in Pharaoh’s House, makes an enormous contribution to the existing literature and reminds us of the universal call to liberation. His clear, concise, and penetrating insights offer much to our understanding of what it means to be human before God and how we respond to the gift and challenge of Christian faith. As Markey identifies the walls that confine the human spirit and breaks down the dualisms between “us” and “them,” he names the divine call to love, service, connection, and mission. Offering a Gospel-based vision of authentic freedom and human solidarity, he helps us see that conversion is not just about individual change but also about social and communal transformation. As he reminds us that we cannot understand the mystery of our lives independently of the mystery of God, he also helps us see that we cannot understand who we are independently of our connection to one another, especially our neighbor in need.
