Cultural appropriation is a term not often used, but when used it carries a weight that is often misunderstood to the point of offense at times. Where do we draw the line between “appropriate” forms of cultural exchange and more damaging patterns of cultural appropriation?
With San Antonio’s culinary selections and availability ever expanding, how do we honor the cultures we are sampling from? Equally our communities are becoming more susceptible to another term that is not used too often. Gentrification. This word too carries the weight of cultural appropriation as our city lends itself host to an expanding economic base of new San Antonians.
The goal of this dinner is to stimulate a critical multi-perspective exchange of voices set around a dinner table, to begin a dialogue that is overdue for this city. With key academicians, politicians and community advocates present we hope to look at these two terms in depth to better understand our own participation in these two unspoken sociological terms.
