SUMMARY:Understanding Fanaticism: Exploring the Extremist Mind and Behavior
DESCRIPTION:Lecture:\n“Extremists and the groups that they form have remarkable strengths that should not be taken lightly. Perhaps their greatest strength is precisely that of certitude: the absolute\, unshakable belief that their views are true and correct. This certainty gives extremists enormous self-assurance and confidence in the inevitable triumph of their particular belief system. Down through history true believers have been able to face persecution\, physical torture\, and even death due to the strength of their deeply held beliefs. That these beliefs focused upon visions of The Perfect and The Ideal helped them in no small measure to propound their visions to the masses\, and to tenaciously defend their views when called upon to do so. No doubts or uncertainties clouded their minds\, and they felt no need for discussion\, much less a need for negotiation and compromise with their foes.” (Arm’s of Little Value\,G. L.
