SUMMARY:Troubling Passages in the Hebrew Bible and New Testament
DESCRIPTION:Both the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament contain passages that deeply disturb and offend our contemporary moral sensibilities. Led by Rabbi Samuel M. Stahl and Rev. Kelly S. Allen\n\n2 Tuesdays\, January 19 & 26\, 7 – 8:30 p.m.\, $35 / 2 sessions \nIt is true that there are ordinances and commandments ordering us to show mercy\, love and compassion to all of God’s children. Yet there are other laws that reinforce bigotry\, condone slavery and mandate the death penalty for homosexuals and recalcitrant children. In this course we shall explore some of these troubling passages and the ways ancient and modern Jewish and Christian thinkers have mitigated their harshness. \nAbout the Instructors: Samuel M. Stahl\, Rabbi Emeritus of Temple Beth-El of San Antonio is author of two books\, Making the Timeless Timely and Boundaries\, Not Barriers. He became Rabbi Emeritus of Temple Beth-El\, in San Antonio\, Texas\, in 2002. For 26 years\, he served as the Temple’s Senior Rabbi. Rev. Kelly S. Allen\, Pastor at University Presbyterian Church\, holds a Master of Divinity with honors from Columbia Theological Seminary and Masters of Arts in politics and religion from the University of Birmingham\, England. \n
