SUMMARY:State of Soul:  Celebrating Death with the Living
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nDavid Zamora Casas\, a local artist\, deeply influenced by la cultura has constructed a 15 ft tall alter in Main Plaza in the heart of the city. The public is invited to interact with the alter by placing photos or memorabilia of their dearly departed as a remembrance. A public reception will be held Nov. 1st from 6:30 to 9pm with a sneak peak on October 29th. The altar will be on display at Main Plaza from October 12th to November 12th. \nFor the past 20 years\, artist David Zamora Casas has created sacred alter installations in cultural arts centers\, galleries\, museums\, universities in the United States and Mexico\, as well as private an public spaces\, honoring the spiritual themes traditional to Dia De Los Muertos. David advises\, “My life’s work has always been connected to oral history\, storytelling\, culture\, issues of time\, place\, and variations of family.” \nDia De Los Muertos is celebrated in Mexico\, throughout Latin America and in the United States on two days in November. Traditionally\, November 1st is the day specifically for children and infants\, “El dia de los angelitos”. Los niños ofrendas could be sugar skulls\, toys\, and a special sweet bread in the shape of a skeleton called Pan de Muerto. \nThe Final Acts Project\, a theatre\, creative arts and humanities based public health initiative\, will collaborate with artist/filmmaker Laura Varela\, artist David Zamora Casas and Main Plaza Conservancy in events that address legacy\, planning\, life and death. The programming includes community art workshops at the Bhil Haus Arts and Haven for Hope. \nMain Plaza Conservancy\, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization\, is dedicated to providing San Antonio and its visitors with the cultural and historical “heart of the city”. Bringing awareness of family and community combined with history and heritage. All events are free and open to the public. Free weekend parking is available for Main Plaza visitors at one of two Frost Bank street-level parking lots Friday nights 5p.m. to midnight and Saturday & Sunday 8 a.m. midnight. \n\n  \n
