DESCRIPTION: \nSun\, April 23\, 2017 | Asian American Resource Center\, 8401 Cameron Rd\, Austin\, TX 78754\n12:00 PM – 1:30 PM \nSince 9/11\, Muslims\, Arabs\, Sikhs\, and South Asians have experienced racial and religious backlash because of their physical appearance and articles of faith. Recent political rhetoric\, mass shootings by violent extremists\, and biased media caricatures have exacerbated this mistreatment. Profiling\, surveillance and hate violence have become a quotidian part of life for these communities. In this lecture\, Arjun Sethi will address these civil rights challenges\, the origins of these misunderstandings\, and prospective solutions going forward. \nBio: Arjun Singh Sethi is a civil rights lawyer\, writer\, and teacher based in Washington\, D.C. He is currently an Adjunct Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center and Vanderbilt University Law School\, where he teaches courses on policing\, profiling\, and hate violence. Arjun has published more than 40 columns in national media outlets\, including The Los Angeles Times\, Politico Magazine\, USA Today\, and The Washington Post\, and he has been a guest on countless radio and television programs\, including NPR\, BBC America\, and BBC World Radio. He has represented victims of domestic violence\, asylum-seekers\, national security detainees\, and criminal defendants on death row. In addition to his media work\, Sethi is also a consultant and advises foundations\, nonprofits\, and advocacy groups on rapid-response policy analysis\, public education\, community organizing\, and movement building. He is currently traveling the country and editing a book on hate speech and hate violence in connection with the 2016 presidential election cycle.
