SUMMARY:From Selma to Ferguson: How Much Progress Have We Made? (pt. 3)
DESCRIPTION:with Jorge Montiel\, Kevin Downey\, and Doshie Piper\n3 Mondays\, Jan. 19\, 26\, and Feb. 2\, 7 – 9 p.m.; $35\nRegister By: Jan. 12. Enrollment: 12 min. / 30 max. \nSome argue that the violence perpetrated against young black men in Ferguson\, Staten Island and other places indicates that we have regressed from the achievements of the civil rights movement. On the other hand\, civil rights activist Angela Davis argues that those killings are part of “an unbroken line of police violence in the US that takes us all the way back to the days of slavery.” Starting on MLK day\, this series of conversations will explore and reflect on the long line that culminates in what Michelle Alexander calls “The New Jim Crow”—mass incarceration of people of color—and the divisive racial impact of our criminal justice policies. Jorge Montiel has been an organizer with the Industrial Areas Foundation for 10 years. Montiel collaborates with the San Antonio Criminal Justice Action Coalition. Jorge will be joined by Dr. Doshie Piper\, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Incarnate Word\, and Dr. Kevin Downey\, Director of Crosspoint. \n
