SUMMARY:Dance: “From Selfish to Selfless: The Saga of Purandara DAsa"
DESCRIPTION:Bihl Haus Arts in collaboration with Kaveri Natya Yoga is pleased to present “From Selfish to Selfless: The Saga of Purandara DAsa\,” a classical Indian dance performance conceptualized\, composed and choreographed by Dr. Sreedhara Aikkhebbalu. The performance recounts the miraculous intervention of the god Vishnu in the life of Purandara DAsa (1484–1564)\, hailed as the father of Carnatic music in India. It is presented in the style of Bharathanatyam\, among the most subtle and sophisticated dance forms in the world. In this style\, dancers metamorphose into moving sculptures formed of arcing arms and tilting torsos. Their bare feet\, adorned by anklets of tiny brass bells\, strike the floor in varied patterns in sync with the hypnotic music. Throughout the performance\, their eyes\, moving nanoseconds ahead of their bodies’ rhythms\, mesmerize and charm the viewer. \nPLOT: Srinivasa Nayaka was a rich and miserable miser. Only the intervention of Vishnu\, disguised as an old man\, could transform his pitiful life. Vishnu approached Srinivasa with a plea for help\, which\, of course\, he selfishly denied. Next the old man asked Srinivasa’s wife for help. She was a kind and pious woman but had no wealth of her own save for her gold nose ring\, which she selflessly gave to the old man. He took the ring to Srinivasa Nayaka and demanded money for it. Assuming that the ring belonged to his wife\, Srinivasa hurried home to confront her. Fearful of Srinivasa’s reaction\, she chose to drink poison to escape his wrath. As she raised the bowl of poison to her lips\, however\, she discoverd\, to her amazement\, the ring at the bottom of the bowl! At the sight of this miracle\, Srinivasa was stuck by sudden enlightenment\, a gift from Vishnu. In return for this gift\, Srinivasa Nayaka became Purandara DAsa. He gave away all of his riches to the poor and became a traveling mendicant\, spreading the word of his own enlightenment and the joy of giving and sharing all over India. He sang simple songs celebrating Vishnu and the spiritually rich life and created Carnatic Music to please the gods and all of the people of the world. \nFEATURED ARTISTS:\n• Dr. Sreedhara Akkihebbalu (Srinivasa Nayaka/Purandara DAsa)\, a physician from Bangalore\, is an accomplished dancer in Bharathanatyam.
